How To Make A Wormy Witches' Brew:

Wormy Witches' Brew is a great little STEM Halloween Activity that works fine motor skills, strength, cause and effect, color theory, and language. Additionally, it is a great bridge between practical life activities and imaginative play. Multiple kids can do this at once and learn social emotional skills too!

Supplies:

  • Paper towels
  • Markers
  • Eye droppers
  • Skewers
  • Water
  • “Cauldron”
  • Baking Soda (optional)
  • Vinegar (optional)

Step 1: Prep your worms

Take your paper towel, tear it down the middle (like splitting a hamburger bun).

NOTE: The photo below shows a tissue, this can work, but a paper towel works much better in my experience!

Use the markers to create a colorful design on the face of the paper towel.

Roll the paper towel, with the color side inward, tightly around a skewer. Twist the paper towel and push it down so it forms a tight little “worm.”

You can decorate the top of the worm too once it's done with some dots or lines.

See video above for visual instructions!

Step 2: Witches' Brew (Simple)

Place your finished worms into your “cauldron”

Fill the eye dropper with water, and slowly add on top of the worms to watch them color and reveal the colors.

Step 3: Extend the play

Once you've grown all your worms with the water, you can make the potion a little fizzy!

Start by sprinkling some baking soda on top of them. In another container have some vinegar to fill your eye droppers with. Repeat the same process as the previous step, but this time the baking soda and vinegar will react to create a fizzy potion.

Set up + Clean up

Personally I would not do this activity with a baby since adding water to the worms can go so fast. Instead I like doing this activity with toddlers and preschoolers who can help make the worms. In which case you can set it up in just a few minutes and the activity can easily take 30+ minutes from start to finish.

Since everything is contained to the cauldron and it's really just paper towels, clean up is a breeze! Simply toss the contents and rinse your container.
