Looking for a no mess fall or Halloween activity to do at home with your preschool kids? This pumpkin patch activity is perfect for refining fine motor skills and teaching numbers or letters to preschoolers!
Supplies:
- Orange or white sheet of paper
- Green crayon or colored pencil
- Orange circle stickers
- Optional: marker or pen
Step-by-Step Pumpkin Patch Activity Tutorial For Preschool Kids:
Set up your pumpkin patch:
Take your sheet of paper and green crayon or pencil and draw a winding “vine.”
Add little circles to denote where the pumpkins will go. You can get as artsy as you'd like here, but it doesn't need to be perfect by any means. I added some leaves and stems, but clearly I'm not an artisit:
Set up your pumpkins:
Take the orange sheet of circle stickers.
Depending on the age of your child you can do this a few ways:
- Leave them blanket – this works best just for fine motor skills of young toddlers
- Add numbers – depending on the age of your child you may want to do 1-10 or you can make it more advanced like 20-30 or prime numbers only, etc.
- Add letters – If your preschooler is learning letters this is a great place to add them. If your preschooler attends a montessori school (or any school where they teach the alphabet phonetically) you may want to check with their teacher to see what letter set they are currently working on.
Once you decide which of the above options you'd like to go with, you'll take the marker or pen, and add the number or letter accordingly (if applicable).
Then in the circles you drew on your sheet, you'll add the corresponding letters or numbers.
Objective:
Have your preschooler or toddler match the stickers to the corresponding pumpkins.
Set up and clean up:
This takes about 3 minutes to make and less than a minute to clean up.
How my preschooler liked this activity:
She really enjoyed it! I mean, what toddler doesn't love stickers? She had so much fun finding the matching pumpkin, showing me her progress along the way. Once she finished it, she asked to do it again.
Which I guess leads me to the only downside of this activity: you can't easily reset it. Once the pumpkins are stuck onto the patch, unless you're using special paper that allows you to peel them off, you'll have to start all over again. Good thing it only takes a few minutes to set up!
Benefits Of this Halloween/Fall Activity:
It works fine motor skills, letter and number shape recognition, cognitive development, problem solving, hands on learning, and more!
It also helps boost concentration and provides you with an easy to set up, no mess activity to engage your child mentally.
