FAQs about Halloween Movies

What are the best Halloween movies of all time?

The best Halloween movies of all time tend to feature a serial killer like in the Halloween films, Texas Chainsaw Massacre by Tobe Hooper, The Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th movies, and Scream.

The Shining starring Jack Nicholson, The Blair Witch Project, and Poltergeist are also in the top 100 Haloween movies consistnely.

What are the best classic Halloween movies for the whole family?

This largely depends on the age of the whole family, so please keep your child's age in mind with these recommendations:

Hocus Pocus featuring the Sanderson Sisters played by Kathy Najimy, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Bette Midler is another fan favorite for family movie night.

Harry Potter – while not an official Halloween movie it's great for getting into the magical spirit of the season without being too scary for little kids.

Practical Magic follows sisters played by Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock as they get a crash course in magic is rated PG-13 and a fun one for older kids.

What Halloween movies did Tim Burton Make?

Tim Burton has made some spooktacular films that always dance around Halloween and are often included on HAlloween lists even if they don't directly relate. Here's a list of the best Tim Burton Halloween movies for the perfect Halloween movie marathon:

  • Nightmare Before Christmas
  • BeetleJuice featuring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, Catherine O’Hara
  • Edward Scissorhands starring Winona Ryder, Johnny Depp, Dianne Wiest

  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter

My favorite as a young girl was Nightmare Before Christmas!

What is the best Michael Myers Halloween movie?

The original 1978 Halloween film directed by John Carpenter is probably the best Halloween movie. The independent horror film is a cult classic featuring Jamie Lee Curtis, Kyle Richards, Nick Castel and Tony Moran.

What is the order of the Michael Myers movies?

List of the 13 Halloween films in chronological order:

  • Halloween (1978)
  • Halloween II (1981)
  • Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
  • Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)
  • Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)
  • Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later (1998)
  • Halloween: Resurrection (2002)
  • Halloween (2018)
  • Halloween Kills (2021)
  • Halloween Ends (2022)

It's also noteworthy that Rob Zombie remade the first Halloween film in 2007, with a sequel in 2009 called Halloween II. Overall these are darker than the original films, but not as good.

What would you add to this halloween movie checklist for Spooky Season?

  1. I am a “not so scary” person and appreciate your list. I have not seen Coraline, and it is on my list. Sleepy Hollow and The Nightmare Before Christmas are two of my favorites.

  2. I watched goosebumps with Jack Black the other day on Netflix and it was awesome! This list is amazing though, I will most likely be referring to it just like you said, after bingeing stranger things lol.

  3. I watched ‘The Nightmare on Elm Street’ on Halloween when I was at a slumber party and it was my first scary-scary movie and I totally couldn’t sleep all night haha

  4. This is such a great list, especially for watching with younger kids, since both the adults and kids will enjoy them! My favorites are Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Ghost Busters!

  5. Love this list! I’m usually not a big Halloween movie person but I love that you included a lot of other stuff in here as well. 🙂

  6. What a great list! I remember most of them and thanks for it, now I’m gonna try to watch them all over again 😀

  7. Omg some of the scary movies listed give me the chills just thinking about them! The Ring scarred me for life, and I had to stop watching the Paranormal Activity movies after the 3rd one…they got too freaky for me! For some reason, though, I could watch Amytiville Horror over and over again. Must be Ryan Reynolds. Hocus Pocus and The Sixth Sense are my faves! Saving this list, for sure.

    1. YESS!! Amityville and Texas Chainsaw i can watch on a loop! I had to turn paranormal activity off 20 minutes into the first one! All this freaky stuff started happening in our house (dogs freaking out, lights in distant rooms randomly turning on and off, no thank you!)
