Halloween Activity: Apple Stamped Pumpkin Craft For Young Children

This apple stamped Pumpkin Halloween craft is great for toddlers and preschool aged kids! I discovered it a few times while searching on Pinterest – where kids painted using fruit as stamps – and decided to give it a try as one of our Halloween Toddler Activities this year!

NOTE: Pinterest vs. Reality was VERY different! You'll see REAL photos of what this actually looks like when a toddler and real mom does it. Not a perfectly Pinterest apple stamped pumpkin an adult did for other adults, HA! No judgement, but this is more so what you can expect and a mom's actual thoughts on doing this activity with my toddler!

We actually did a few Halloween themed painting ideas which you can check out in this post: 11 Fun + Easy Halloween Activities For Toddlers: Sensory Learning

With that said, our Apple Stamped Pumpkin Halloween Craft may not be the most Pinterest worthy, we did have fun! (see video below!)

For reference, my daughter a young toddler (20 months), I'll do this again with her next year and update how she does with it as an older toddler!

Step 1: Cut your apple

Cut your apple in half. If you can, do it just off center so you don't get the inner core/seeds. The smoother face of the apple will work better as a stamp.

OPTIONAL: You can just cut the apple in half and give it to your toddler OR you can cut a little “handle” into the back of the apple. So on the rounded side, you'd cut a little chunk off either side, leaving an apple chunk handle in the middle. If you sit the apple flat, it should look like that tetris puzzle piece that looks like a perpendicular angle. I didn't do this, but would recommend in retrospect as it makes it easier for little hands to actually “stamp”

Step 2: Stamp your pumpkin

You can either paint the apple with the orange paint or you can have a big pile of paint and stamp the apple into the paint. Either way get the apple face covered in your orange paint.

Then on a piece of paper or on a paper plate, stamp the paint covered apple to create your pumpkin form.

Step 3: Decorate your pumpkin

Once your pumpkin is dry, get to decorating it!

You can either use a black marker or paint to put a face on. This works better with older toddlers I'd say.

For younger toddlers, I'd suggest having some googly eyes or pipe cleaner or paper cut outs to add a face and pumpkin stem/leaves.

There's no right or wrong way so just get to decorating!

How long to set up and clean up:

Altogether this took about 3-5 minutes to set up and takes 2 minutes to clean up. I keep our paints in the kitchen so it's easy to whip them out while I'm cooking or meal prepping and keep her entertained. The washable paint comes off very easy with just a little dish soap and water from her toddler tower and the kitchen counter!
