Trampolines are great for kids, but finding the best trampoline for toddlers, kids, and adults can feel overwhelming. There's indoor or outdoor options, ones with handles and net enclosures for added safety; and then of course the great springless or spring debate.

In this post you'll discover good trampolines for age 1 through 10 (and even one's suitable for adults), as well as trampoline safety tips and rules to teach your kids.

NOTE: The following list is ordered by size from smallest to largest. Generally speaking, the smaller the trampoline size, the lower the bounce height, the less risk of injury and safer. Of course, that's not foolproof, and you should definitely take additional safety precautions when using a trampoline, which we cover below!

For 1 year olds, a common trampoline rec is from Galt Toys; however we suggest the SmarTrike Toddler Trampoline with a ball pit instead for a couple reasons.

Galt Toys trampoline's foam on the handlebar is very quick to come off with a teething baby and it's a little too bouncy for our comfort at that age. Additionally, it's smaller than SmarTrike's (which we think is the smallest option you should consider), and kids will grow out of it very quickly.

How To Choose The Best Trampoline For Kids + Toddlers

Size

Generally speaking, the smaller the trampoline the lower the bounce height, the safer it is for toddlers and kids.

Additionally, there's less temptation for multiple jumpers at once – a key in keeping kids safe on trampolines!

Of course, you'll also want to check the trampolines footprint to the area you plan to set it up to ensure it fits.

Limits

Check the manufacturer recommendations when it comes to age and total weight limits before purchasing.

Ensure you follow these closely for a safe trampoline experience.

Safety

While most trampolines on the market come with basic safety features like a pad to cover the spring or netting, you also want to consider some other safety features:

  • Bar or no bar: Bars provide a nice handle for added stability. The height of these can often adjust. Be sure that the handlebar is the right height and your child doesn't hit their chin on it. Additionally, make sure it's coated in something that young toddlers can't chew off.
  • Netting: Netting reduces the likelihood of toddlers or kids jumping off the trampoline; however kids should still be surprised while on trampolines with safety netting as some kids like to climb the net or roughhouse where they throw each other into the netting
  • Distance to floor: Falling from a lower height decreases risk of severe injury

Durability

While most trampolines indoor durability is fine, if selecting an outdoor backyard trampoline, you'll want something that's rust and UV resistant.

Generally speaking, more springless trampolines will do better indoors as these tend to not be as UV resistant.

Assembly + storage

Of course, we all want easy assembly, however consider whether or not you can easily disassemble the handlebar or netting for easy storage if you getting a smaller trampoline plan to move around frequently.

Warranty

Trampolines get a lot of wear and tear, so selecting one with a warranty can provide additional comfort in some cases.

These vary from 1 to 10 years in our experience, largely depending on the initial investment of the trampoline with smaller/more affordable trampolines offering no warranty.

FAQs About Trampolines For Toddlers + Kids

What age should a child go on a trampoline?

While many 1 year old babies will take an interest in trampolines, it's best to check the manufacturer's age recommendations before using.

Trampolines offer many benefits for kids of all ages and adults, but they come with risk of injury as well, not matter how safe they are considered.

What safety precautions should be taken when a toddler or child uses a trampoline?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes, allowing multiple children to jump simultaneously increases the risk of injury significantly. Studies have shown that around 75% of trampoline related injuries occur with multiple jumpers on at once.

Trampoline Safety Checklist:
  • Minimum number of jumpers on at a time: If multiple jumpers at once try to keep children of a similar size together (e.g. no big kids with toddlers)
  • Adult supervision at all times: No phones! Follow pool safety rules here
  • Assemble properly: Ensure you are following the assembly instructions, including safety accessories
  • Regular checks: Frequent maintenance and material checks (tight screws, check fo wear, pads covering metal springs fully, legs unbent, etc.)
  • Educate children about safety rules (no flips and tricks or hanging from safety netting)
  • Location: Place trampoline on even, sturdy surface – do a test bounce to ensure it doesn't slip/move when bounced on too. Also clear the space around the trampoline incase a child falls
  • Recalls: Ideally your trampoline came with a card to fill out and mail back to receive notification in case of recalls; however it's still a good idea to check your model at U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s official website every 6 to 12 months.

How to talk to toddlers + kids about trampoline safety:

I know talking to a 2 year old about safe trampoline use can feel daunting, but it's critical. I've found watching this video on trampoline safety with toddlers from the ACCC (Australia's Consumer Product Commission, like our CPSC) is a great place to start:

The graphics are toddler friendly and bring a visual example of what you're saying to life. Additionally, if your child doesn't respond to verbal safety reminders while jumping, you can end the trampoline session, watch the video to explain why, and try again another day.

What are the benefits of trampolines for kids?

  • Assist with sensory processing and self regulation thanks to proprioceptive and vestibular input.
  • Builds total body strength
  • Improves balance
  • Good for heart and lymphatic system
  • Stress relieving
  • Increase concentration
  • Improves visual and auditory processing
  • Enhances body awareness

What activities can toddlers do on a trampoline?

With no horseplay as a major rule, it can be helpful to have some structured activities in mind for toddlers on trampolines (especially larger ones!). Try these:

  • Musical freeze: Similar to musical chairs, have toddler bounce and then freeze when the music stops. The act of jumping and stopping helps with stability
  • Musical bounce: Have them bounce to the rhythm of a song you sing together
  • Crawling tunnel on a trampoline
  • Eye-spy: Play a game of bouncing eye-spy for an added challenge. You could also create little “targets” using colored post-its around the room, have them close their eyes and count to 10, then try to find them all while bouncing
  • Build a fort to read books: This works especially well with a safety net or bar. The act of building the fort will provide a gentle bounce, and then laying down to read the book will also give a little sensory input. NOTE: Do NOT bounce regularly with the fort on!
  • Jump bounce: Have your child jump, then land on their butt then work on the 1/2 kneel to their knees as they become stronger/more coordinated
  • Egg or orbeez challenge: Using an egg or water bead (orbeez), place on a spoon and have them bounce without dropping/cracking their “egg”

What is the safest trampoline for a 2 year old?

Generally speaking, the smaller the trampoline, the lower the bounce height, the safer it is for toddlers.

However, when choosing the safest trampoline for a 2 year old, start by ensuring it's rated safe for that age.

Next, consider your toddlers personality. In some cases having a safety net may be safer to contain them, in other cases, a safety net may be yet another invitation to climb something.

Is a spring or bungee (springless) trampoline safer for kids?

Truthfully, there's no great answer here as each come with different pros and cons.

Spring trampolines tend to have a lower bounce height (safer), but come with the added risk of more frequent and potential for malfunctions (springs breaking/flying off, pad coming off and exposing springs that could pinch/cut or limbs falling through between springs).

Springless (bungee) trampolines tend to have a higher bounce (greater risk of injury/cervical snaps, sprains, or falls), but are a little safer in terms of how the jumping portion attaches to the frame. For instance, if a bungee snaps, it just breaks, versus flying across the room. Additionally, the gap between bungee cords is generally smaller than between springs.

Spring vs Springless Trampolines:

Beyond safety, it's noteworthy that traditional spring trampolines tend to hold up better outdoors. Springless trampolines tend to wear faster outside and are better suited for indoor use.

For smaller trampolines, the bounce difference is quite noticeable between springless and springed trampolines.

If you've never jumped on a springless rebounder style trampoline I suggest doing so before purchase. Personally, I prefer a traditional spring trampoline for kids. When doing knee to stand bounces on a moderately sized springless one, I discovered just how easy it could be to get a little whiplash and I wouldn't feel comfortable with multiple kids on one.

With that said, once you get into larger trampolines the bounce height on a spring vs springless is kind of the same, so the previous story wouldn't apply.

Is a trampoline suitable for a 2 year old?

If a trampoline is rated safe for a 2 year old, suitability will ultimately come down to the toddlers personality.

Toddlers who tend to bounce off the walls will likely benefit greatly from a trampoline; however they also need to listen to safety guidelines. Be prepared to end trampoline time promptly if a 2 year old doesn't listen to safety rules (see safety video suggestion above).

If a 2 year old doesn't start following trampoline guidelines after 2-3 times of ending a session due to improper use, I'd probably put it away and try again in a few months.

Are mini trampolines safe for 3 year olds?

Most mini trampolines are rated safe by ATSM for 3 year olds; however you should double check the specific model you want before purchasing.

Which trampoline is the best for kids?

For safety reasons, we consider the best trampoline for kids to be on the smaller end to encourage single jumper use and for easier overall storage. To that end, the overall best trampoline for toddlers and adults is the Upper Bounce thanks to its sturdy, durable design. The round trampoline comes in 40 or 48″ options with a five level adjustable handlebar, making it large enough for growth and small enough for kids.

The best baby trampoline for age 1 to 3, then the SmarTrike Toddler Trampoline with an optional ball pit is a great option.

Lastly, if you do want a larger trampoline, you can't go wrong with Skywalker Trampolines which come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and springless or springed options. Additionally, they are ATSM certified and have a patented no-gap enclosure to eliminate dangerous gaps between the net and the jumping surface, protecting children from pinch points and openings.
