Gift Ideas for 5 year olds to 7 year olds
Spy Kit
This spy kit is an absolute hit with my kids! In fact, they brought it to school and it became such a hot item that the teacher told them to stop bringing it because everyone was fighting over it.
It includes a listening device, motion alarm, spy light, and an invisible ink pen with secret paper holder as well as clips and a tool belt to attach everything onto.
Alternatively, this detective kit includes a finger printing kit and crime accessories plus activities that I think would be a huge hit too.
Blue Light Blockers
If you’ve ever dealt with sleep issues you know how important it is and the blue light we’re exposed to after the sun goes down can actually destroy our bodies natural supply of melatonin which is why I’m a huge fan of blue light blocking glasses.
For adults, I love BonCharge (discount code TCM) but for kids, I found this pair and they are just as good in the orange lenses. It won’t fit most heads smaller than 5 years old though and should be good until about 11 years old-ish.
Birdie
Birdie is a personal safety alarm that I LOVE for kids, teens, and adults! Basically you just clip it onto a key ring, backpack, their clothes, bike helmet, whatever. I think during that 5 to 7 age range, many kids start to get more freedom, but not always a phone to express if they are in danger, so this is a great screen free safety option they can easily learn how to use.
Legos
Legos are definitely a fan favorite for this age range and so many more sets become available/age appropriate at 5 years old.
I love to use this time of year to stock up on $10-$15 projects that I keep in a closet for classmates last minute birthdays like this monster truck or pokemon set.
We also save on bigger sets like this Gabby Dollhouse.
Family Holiday Look
One tradition a friend of mine had growing up was matching family outfits gifted on Christmas Eve. It’s such a fun tradition for so many families and this years “must have” Santa holiday sweater comes in sizing for babies, toddlers, kids, and adults with every color imaginable!
Character Figures
I find at this age, kids often are set on their building toys like magnatiles or trains, and toy rotation is often a thing of the past… but they do love swapping out the characters they use with those little worlds they are building.
I get little character figurines like this bundled for $8 to $15 and find they are so much cheaper than 5 Below. I’ll rotate out which characters my kids have in their doll bin every few months to keep things fresh in their play and it’s a huge hit.
Themed Slippers
This was a gift my daughter got last year and it was an ABSOLUTE FAVORITE! I love a nice themed slipper for the holidays to kepe their feet warm going into the cooler months and kids at this age just love expressing themselves and these are a great selection for boys and girls.
Camera
My kids always love their digital cameras! They take pictures, we have the digital ones and the ones that print on thermal paper too. Both are a hit and this time of year you can get great deals.
We are on our 2nd round of cameras, so I will say you do get what you pay for as these don’t tend to last more than a year or two.
Make-Do
Like I mentioned, at this age most kids have all the “building” toys they’ll ever want/need and we all know that too often cardboard boxes become the favorite gift of the day.
As a side note, this often happens because kids are overwhelmed and cardboard boxes are sort of a consistent comfort item.
Anyway, these tools are specifically designed for cardboard and kids making them an awesome gift. They are suitable for 5 and up as it does require some strength and dexterity to use them.
But they are an absolute hit and we are thinking about doing a “cardboard” party even this year where I just throw cardboard around the driveway and let kids go wild instead of a typical birthday party.

Outfoxed
I’ve shared this game several times, including in my best board games for kids video – and it’s still my #1 pick! It’s a cooperative “whodunnit” board game that is a blast for kids from 4 to 10 years old! Great for mixed age families!
Air Dry Clay
Air dry clay is one of our favorite consumables that people often overlook as a gift in favor of playdough or paint sticks but it’s a must have in my book!
There are two styles: true modeling clay and then a more soft/polymer type of blend. Both are great but they give you a very different end result.
The modeling clay is going to be fragile and can easily break while the polymer blends you can turn into bouncy balls and the like.
For younger kids I do like the polymer blend, but also have used the modeling clay for more lasting projects they’re going to want to paint like holiday ornaments or holiday themed paper weights.
Books
If you’re following the 5 gift rule you know something to read is always important. I love to choose meaningful books based on what I’m seeing my child go through at this time. Two of my favorite authors for this are Kobi Yamada and Max Lucado’s Wemmicks books.
Yamada’s books are very entrepreneurship and growth mindset focused while Max Lucado’s Wemmicks books are more of a social/self worth skew.
Yoto
The Yoto is a screen-free (ish) listening device for kids and I prefer it over the Tonie box for so many reasons, but especially as kids get older.
It’s compact, easy to travel with, and the story selection for older kids is pretty expansive. You can also connect to the internet for kids radio, the weather, etc.
Build A Story Cards
These are great for 3 years old and up. I find them to be a perfect travel toy across a wide range of ages. You can have kids make up their own stories or “play” them like ad libs where you each throw a picture down and add onto the story.
StoryBook Disney Sets
Disney has it’s own Polly Pocket playsets that are either Disney branded or Lego branded.
Both are great though and my kids LOVE these. I think the Lego one’s are better for travel.
Foil Fun
These foil fun kits were one of my favorites growing up and my kids LOVE them too! They are great for 4 to 9 year olds; but definitely a little messy since it’s basically a bunch of stickers they’ll be pulling the backs off of and then pressing foil onto. So lots of scraps.
But they are really fun and soothing to do as an adult with your kids, work fine motor skills for younger ones, and just a really fun and easy craft with lots of theme options.
Lovevery Reading Skill Set
We got this for my 5 year old and her reading has been FLYING! It’s a program designed for pre-k to second grade reading skills full of games and books that actually make learning to read an experiential and fun process.
I reviewed what you get inside the boxes here and shown how we structure our at home reading lessons here!
Bird Feeder
A clear window suction bird feeder is one of the shadiest gifts that is a HUGE hit! Just don’t forget the bird feed because kids will likely want to set this up right away.
It brings the birds right up to your window for kids to look at – just make sure you have a good window without screens!
