Fizzy Eggs: Vinegar And Baking Soda Science Experiment With Eggs

I did it with my 2 year old and she had a blast! All you need is a little vinegar and baking soda with your Easter eggs to have a fun afternoon!

Supplies

• Egg carton or muffin tray
• Easter eggs
• baking soda
• vinegar
• water
• Squeeze jar/eye dropper/ladle
• food coloring
• (optional): tiny easter themed toys/objects

Step 1: Add open eggs to tray

Use an empty egg carton or muffin tin as your tray. Place the halved/open easter eggs inside.

NOTE: I used a cardboard/compostable egg carton and it held up fine. My 2 year old actually enjoyed the sensory experience of the cardboard in the fizzy science experiment mixture!

Step 2: Fill your eggs

Inside of each open egg add some baking soda. You'll need less than you think! If you have any tiny toys, this would be the time to add them too – consider even burying them in baking soda so they are a surprise!

For toddlers and preschoolers, the tiny toys are not necessary at all in my opinion, but are a fun surprise and a way to extend the play. I used these chickens and these turtles.

Right before you give this to your kid, add a drop of food coloring in each egg. If you add the food coloring too soon it may harden/be harder to get the color explosion.

Step 3: Set the scene for your toddler

Bring your tray somewhere that you won't mind if the surrounding area gets a little messy. We did this outside, but you could place your tray inside one of those plastic “under the bed” bins or in a bathtub.

Give a few options for your busy toddlers tiny hands or that meet your preschooler where they are at developmentally. Some things I've used/tried:

• A squeeze tube
• Eye dropper (these ones are great for tiny hands)
• Ladle
• Stacking cups

Optionally, you can also place some small toys/figurines next to the tray as well or a bin of water to rinse the hidden toys.

How my toddler (2 year old) enjoyed this activity:

She LOVED it! We were watching a video the other day actually of kids doing a baking soda/vinegar rainbow activity, I asked if she remembered doing something similar for her Witch’s Brew: Potion Station – a Halloween Sensory Play Activity For Toddlers + Kids and she said no. So I knew it was time to create another holiday themed science experiment: easter style this time!

This kept her engaged for about an hour. Once she found the surprise animals in the eggs, she enjoyed washing them off in the bucket of water I had set up as well.

We ended up having leftover baking soda in the eggs, so I just set it aside and reintroduced it a couple days later. She had a blast the next time too.

Set up and clean up time:

This took about 5-8 minutes to set up. Clean up took about 3-5 minutes. Since we did it outside, I just hosed everything down and threw the eggs in the sink to rinse. If doing this inside, depending on how messy your child is it could take about 10 minutes to clean up or so. I'd strongly suggest using an under the bed bin if doing inside to contain the fizzy egg explosion! Or do it in a bathtub/shower.
