Is Splendid Spoon Healthy?
Yes, compared to a standard American diet I'd say Splendid Spoon is healthy.
It focuses on plant-based, whole ingredients like vegetables, legumes, healthy fats, whole grains, and antioxidant rich foods. Their meals are are complete and well balanced in my experience with a good amount of fiber and protein.
With that said, to an extent I do thing “healthy” is a slightly subjective term and it misses the mark in some ways…
For instance, some people can't eat gluten and others can. Personally, I don't like that they use canola oil in some of their bowls. Canola oil is very inflammatory and our household thrives on anti-inflammatory diets. Personally, I'd prefer this was a cold pressed extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil.
On a similar note: let's talk environmental toxins…
Splendid Spoon uses a lot of rice to make their meals gluten free (e.g. rice noodles).
I hope we see this change or more transparency about the rice and how they are testing it for environmental toxins. Over the last 5 years we are really only just now seeing articles/data come out about the arsenic level in rice and “action levels” from the FDA are only slowly being planned/implemented.
With SO many people moving toward gluten free options, my concern is that people are unknowingly increasing their exposure to these toxins and thinking they are “being healthy.” I'd love to see some variety from Splendid Spoon where they use a mix of rice flour, cassava, chickpea, quinoa, and lentil flours. —
NOTE: This is why I say healthy is subjective! We do a rotation of these flours and others so that we we aren't getting too much of any one's particular “downside.” We know toxins can't be avoided entirely, but we strive for variety and balance in our house.
Furthermore, I'm personally not comfortable microwaving any type of plastic is ever healthy – even if it is BPA and phthalate free.
Their products are delivered in plastic, which means that their biggest “pro” of quick, easy, zero mess meals isn't actually the case for us.
Since I don't take it from the freezer into the microwave in the plastic container, I either need to thaw it in advance or wrestle a frozen meal from a plastic container into a glass bowl, which I then have to clean.
I do hope they switch their packaging of their food to a clean cardboard option – like they did with their delivery packaging – and make those small swaps in their ingredients. At that point, I could give it a stamp of approval on the health front, but currently do not for our family.
Is Splendid Spoon organic?
Yes and no. Some of their ingredients are organic and others are not. To see which ingredients are organic, you need to look at the label of each individual item.
Personally, I'm okay with a not fully organic meal delivery service – but there are certain things I really do believe should be organic.
It seems like overall they follow organic for the “dirty dozen” – which is great. The “dirty dozen” are the 12 product items that are found to have the most pesticides/herbicides/contaminants each year, according to the EWG.
However, I personally believe it's equally important to opt for organic on grains, including legumes due to the overuse of glyphosate. Thus I do wish they'd swap out their chickpeas, quinoas, etc. for organic options.
Do you lose weight on Splendid Spoon?
It's not promoted as a weight loss program.
I think you'd have to look at what you're currently eating for breakfast, lunch, and dinner compared to what you're getting with Splendid Spoon to determine that individually.
With that said, I feel like for most Americans would lose weight eating Splendid Spoon as it's much cleaner compared to the average standard American diet in my opinion.
What about portion sizes?
I know some people have said the portion size is a bit smaller than they are accustomed too – personally I've always felt full from my Splendid Spoon meals.
How long do splendid spoon meals last?
Splendid Spoon grain bowls, noodle bowls, and soups can last up to 3 months in the freezer. They recommend eating within 1-2 weeks of receiving if kept in the fridge though.
Personally, I froze mine for almost a month and then ate a few that I'd thawed in the fridge over the course of a week and they tasted good. More on my taste test to come in future posts though!
How long do splendid spoon smoothies last?
Splendid Spoon smoothies last in the refrigerator for 1 week, and in the freezer for up to 1 month.
How do you cancel a splendid spoon?
Canceling Splendid Spoon is easy! Just click “edit plan” in the top left under “your plan.” When you scroll to the bottom you'll see “Cancel Your Plan.”
How do you use Splendid Spoon?
Personally, I've been testing our quick, healthy meal delivery options during my pregnancy to make life with a toddler while working from home full time easier. I'm planning to stock my freezer with some delicious, quick, easy options for the postpartum period as well.
I think you definitely pay more for convenience, so I wouldn't use it all year, every year, but for this season of our life it's helping me!
Splendid Spoon vs. Daily Harvest:
- I think if you're #1 concern is the quickest, easy, lowest mess/prep Splendid Spoon wins by a LONG shot.
- If you want the healthiest and cleanest options, Daily Harvest wins.
They both offer a slightly different variety of meal options too – which will obviously be unique to your diet and taste buds.
For instance, Daily Harvest really focuses on breakfasts, lunches, and snacks. Daily Harvest Breakfast options cover everything you could want as a vegan: coffees, protein balls, oat and chia bowls, smoothies. And they have flatbreads, harvest bowls, and even ice cream options!
Splendid Spoon focuses on smoothies, wellness shots, and grain and noodle bowls. The grain and noodle bowls are great for either lunch OR dinner. Whereas with Daily Harvest offerings, I only like their harvest bowls as dinners (and I LOVE Daily Harvest flatbreads, but they feel like lunch to me).
- Portion sizes of Splendid Spoon are a bit bigger feeling.
One Splendid Spoon smoothie is two servings, and I have never finished one in a single sitting so that feels very accurate. Whereas Daily Harvest I enjoy the entire smoothie in one sitting and tend to get hungry shortly after. Splendid Spoon definitely offers more protein overall in my experience, making it a more complete meal option.
- Which is good because Splendid Spoon costs slightly more per meal currently.
