Step 1: Make your Halloween ghost

Take your contact paper and you can either cut out a square or cut out a ghost form.

TIP: Go smaller than you think you'll need. Remember, our toddlers are tiny people, so the Ghost I made seemed like the right size to me, but when I gave it to her it seemed HUGE haha!

For the square: Cut the square then use your black marker to draw a ghost form on. Don't forget eyes and a face!

For younger toddlers, I'd recommend cutting the actual ghost form as they probably won't understand “staying in the lines” concept if you just draw a ghost form on the square. I used this method and used the “pacman” ghost as my inspiration and used my marker to dry on the eyes.

In cutting the ghost form, I also added little wings (see video). The wings are where I taped the ghost form onto the wall.

Step 2: Prep your cotton balls

Grab a bag of cotton balls and a bowl. Separate the cotton balls so they are deconstructed into many pieces. This will give them a fluffier finish and allow 1 cotton ball to cover a larger surface area (so you use less cotton balls ultimately).

Step 3: Set up your station

Tape your ghost to a wall or sliding door. If doing the square, just tape off all the edges so it lays flat.

If doing the ghost form, you can tape off the “wings” and even add a looped tape to the backing of your ghost; or you can tape off the edges (that seemed to complicated for me though lol). It's noteworthy though, my toddler did try to pull the ghost off by one of the edges since it wasn't fully taped down, I redirected her and she didn't do it again, but just a heads up!

I moved a little side table next to this and placed the bowl of cotton next to it.

NOTE: I added black cotton balls over my marker eyes because I was nervous my kid would try to put the white cotton on the eyes; she didn't. But she did enjoy taking the black eyes on and off!

After that you're ready to play! You may need to model this a few times for your toddler to get the concept.

Fluffy stick ghost in action:

As you may have seen in the video, my toddler didn't love the feel of the contact paper on her hand. So she ended up using the cotton on our Mummy Match activity instead.

After I recorded that video though, I introduced tweezers, so she didn't need to get her hands on the contact paper, and she started enjoying it muchhhh more!!

If your child is older, give them these kids tweezers to pick the cotton up with and stick to the wall!

How long to set up and clean up:

Altogether this took about 5 minutes to set up and 2 seconds to clean up (I'm usually just putting the bowl of cotton back on the table if she moves it). When we are done-done with this activity though, I'll just need to throw out the paper so clean up is under 1 minute!
