I Washed My Hair With Beer, Here’s What Happened

beer for hair, beer rinse, beer treatment, beer shampoo, broo, diy beer wash, hair growth, hair shine

Thank you BRÖÖ for sponsoring this post. As always, all thoughts, opinions, and experiences are my own.

Apparently washing your hair with beer is a thing. Seriously, google “beer for hair” and over 123 million results will come up! When I first heard about BRÖÖ, I was skeptical. I don't drink and am super sensitive to the smell of alcohol. The thought of walking around with my head smelling like a brewery left me… well less than excited.

skeptical, not excited

After some reading about the benefits of beer for your hair (even Catherine Zeta Jones does it to get her pretty locks),  I decided to try BRÖÖ's craft beer for your hair!  They are a US based company, using natural ingredients to offer beer based shampoo and conditioner. Even better, BRÖÖ is cruelty free and vegan. Looking through the ingredients (or lack thereof) I was highly intrigued. They don't use sulfates, parabens, phthalate, silicones, dyes, artificial fragrances and a bunch of other scary looking chemicals that I can't pronounce. Seriously, did you guys know all of this stuff was going onto your head, seeping into your scalp, so close to your brain?!?

yikes

How It Works

The key ingredients in beer, barley, hops, yeast and water, are what make your hair shiny, healthy, and strong. During the brewing process, natural chemical reactions occur between these ingredients, allowing the makers to skip all the previously mentioned harsh and harmful chemicals, #winning! Since this post isn't a science experiment… well it kind of is... you can read more about the roles of the ingredients here.

Initial Thoughts

The box of samples arrived on a hot South Florida summer day. When I unboxed them, I was taken by how cute the packaging is! I love the clean lines and bold contrasts of color. It felt gender neutral (which it is) and on trend. I guess I wouldn't expect anything different though considering the first ingredient in each bottle is craft beer.

I picked one up to smell test, the bottle was warm from traveling in the sweltering heat. When I cracked it open to get a whiff, I immediately recoiled. I sniffed each one and they all smelled like alcohol to me. I hoped it was just because of traveling in the heat and once they had a chance to cool down it would get better.

The Moment Of Truth

I only wash my hair once ever two weeks. I eagerly let the days roll by until it was finally time to try some of them. When I squeeze a dollop in my hand, I was immediately pleasantly surprised! The previous alcohol smell was totally gone. The texture of the shampoo looks almost like honey, and the conditioner is like a creamy whipped caramel butter. Now that each bottle had cooled off I could actually get an idea of how they smelled, and it was amazing!

BRÖÖ's Thickening (yellow):

This was probably my favorite smell with its hints of orange, grapefruit, and vanilla creme, it screams summer.

Does it thicken? YES! Both my husband and I noticed a difference with this stuff! However, we both have super thick hair and living in humid South Florida we are often trying to reduce the size of our hair, not get it to look more voluminous. So we probably wouldn't use this regularly.

How does it smell after a wash: Like faint citrus. Absolutely no beer smell. Honestly the beer smell went away from that initial heated smell test for all of these.

broo shampoo and conditioner

BRÖÖ's Moisturizing (blue):

This is probably the hardest smell to describe, it says “hops flowers” and I can definitely get a whiff of floral but really it just smells good. I kept asking my husband to describe the smell and he just kept saying, “I don't know but its good.”

Does it moisturize? YES! I think what's most noteworthy, with all the shampoos, but this one especially, is that you can actually feel your hair being moisturized. For instance, when I use a lot of shampoos, during the rinse, I can actually feel my hair get “squeaky” clean, dried out, and stripped of all the natural oils. With this, my hair felt soft and hydrated right away. I rinsed it twice as long as I normally would, just trying to get that “dry” feeling, but it really never came.

How does it smell after a wash? Neutral. My hair smelled clean, but not like anything in particular.

BRÖÖ's Invigorating (green):

This is probably my all around favorite! Made with peppermint, my husband said it smells like a “candy cane” and I have to agree.

Does it invigorate? YES! We typically use a tea tree based conditioner, so I was interested if the peppermint would have a similar “tingly” effect. Initially, when I stared to massage it into my head, I thought, “well by now my head would normally start tingling with my other conditioner,” and began to question whether or not this was going to really “invigorate” my scalp.

I always let my conditioner set for a few minutes when showering, and sure enough, a minute later the tingle started! Normally, my tea tree products will start tingling right away and then the tingle wears off, this is more of a delayed tingle, and the tingle is stronger and lasts much longer. Honestly, I think I prefer it and can't wait to cover my head in it and hit a sauna and steam room session with it in, I think it'll be like aromatherapy mixed with conditioning! #DoubleWin!

PRO TIP: If you ever go to saunas or steam rooms, douse your hair in conditioner and tie it up in a bun, it's like a hot conditioning treatment!

How does it smell after the wash? Minty! I really love all things mint, so I couldn't stop smelling my hair the next day.

Giving Back

Aside from my hair feeling great, and supporting a US based company, BRÖÖ actually gives back with their Shower the World Foundation. They support clean water and hygiene initiatives worldwide, so every time you buy BRÖÖ, someone else gets clean too.

Would I keep washing my hair with beer?

YES! I would definitely keep using beer for my hair! I think my personal magic combo is the moisturizing shampoo and invigorating conditioner. But I love that they give a few options to meet everyone's unique hair needs. My husband and I both agreed, all of the shampoo's lather way better than traditional ones and you can actually feel the difference in BRÖÖ's clean ingredients versus other shampoos with their harsh chemicals which strip your hair.

After the first wash, my hair really did feel softer and looked shinier. I will say though, I read a bunch of reviews before trying it and found a few that said to rinse your hair longer than usual to make sure you get all the excess out. When using the products, I could tell why, they definitely feel richer than your everyday shampoo or conditioner. So I rinsed twice as long as I normally would (I usually like to leave a little conditioner in my hair) and my hair came out amazingggg! I had way less frizz than usual. The first time my husband did not rinse super well and his was puffier than he normally likes. So rinse thoroughly!

Plus any company that's using natural ingredients, based in the US, gives back, and lives up to their promises is good in my book! You can pick up all of the shampoos and conditioners at Walmart now!

  1. What the whaaaaat? I have never heard of washing your hair with beer! These products sound super nice. My husband likes to brew craft beer himself so I bet he’d love these. Any word on color safety?
Also how the heck did you get to the point where you can wash your hair every two weeks? The most I can go is 4 days before my head is itching like crazy.

  2. This is so interesting! I had never heard of this, but it’s crazy sometimes what natural products will do for you. Can’t believe it didn’t even smell like beer either. I’d love to see a post on your hair routine! I always find it intriguing when people only wash their hair every so often- I have to wash mine every 3 days and that’s pushing it.

    1. It really is! I am also so surprised by how harmful so many products we are used to are! It was really crazy, I kept asking my intern and my husband to smell it / me and get their thoughts to see if it was in my head but they both agreed! — anddd my hair routine is insanely boring: wash my hair, towel dry, let it air dry over night, wear it in a loose braid it for 2 days to get the volume down and a little curl, then whatever I want for 2-3 weeks (most buns and braids still just because htere is SO much of it, but i wear it down sometimes). I dont use products regularly (if i use dry shampoo i have to wash it within 48 hours) and occasionally i’ll do a hair mask, but mostly just conditioner and a sauna session ever few months!

  3. Um…..YAS! Not only are we both Floridians who suffer the fate of humidity and ‘blah’ hair most of the year, but I only wash my hair about once a week, too! 🙂 Although, my hair is now thinning out over the years (not happy about it!!!!), so out of the 3 – which do you feel gave you the most beneficial results?? I am dying to get this, you have no idea!

    1. haha i feel like in order to manage your hair in FL you HAVE to wait at least a week to wash it! Otherwise you’re just a frizzy mess! – i think my winning combo is what I mentioned at the end of the post, the moisturizing shampoo and invigorating conditioner!

  4. I would be so nervous to try this but your hair looks amazing! I like that they have so many scents too because I’m not a fan of the way beer smells either!

  5. A hair company that gives back?! How cool is that! I’ve heard of beer for hair, but have never tried it, so I’m glad I read this! Your hair looks great!

  6. Oh my gosh this is so cool! I love the fact that it helps to thicken (I have such thin hair!) AND they give back! Totally need to try this soon!

  7. I love the packaging as well! I use to wash my hair with plain beer all the time and it always made it so shiny.

  8. I remember when you first mentioned on Instagram about receiving these products, and I was really looking forward to hearing about how they worked for you!

Not gonna lie, I got a little distracted after reading that you wash your hair only once every two weeks. As a curly girl, I try to wash my hair as LITTLE as possible, but so far, I’m only down to twice a week. HOW. How do you do it??

Haha, moving on…this brand sounds really cool, and now I wanna try it out. I’m always looking for healthier alternatives to traditional shampoos/conditioners, as they can be even worse for people with curly hair. This post was right up my alley! (Also, can relate to not wanting to make my hair any bigger during the day. lol)
Love that your husband tried them out too!

    1. HAHA yesss! So it did take like a year or two of training. There was a buzzfeed video (or one of those platforms) within the last year where they talk to doctors about how frequently we should actually wash our hair… basically I just kept pushing the limit, being REALLY okay with the “heavy head” feeling as I pushed the wash day a few days later each time. The related post I linked give some advice on how I work out without washing it too! Mostly the low braid is my BFF.

  9. When I clicked on the post, I anticipated your washing with straight up beer (out of a can) and I thought – it’s gonna reek, girl! Nice to know you can get the beer benefits without the reek. 🙂

  10. So interesting! I’ve never heard of this brand, but I’ve heard of washing your hair with beer. Now I really really want to try it!

  11. Super Millennial

Haha definitely didn’t know this was a thing! Learn something new everyday!

  12. Um, I am going to have to get this. I really like trying new things on my hair, but haven’t found something that I have absolutely fallen in love with yet. I really hope I fall in love with these!

  13. I have the worst luck with shampoo and conditioner and I am always switching because my hair is so had to manage! I have heard of beer for hair (my granny used to tell me that was her secret weapon.) but I have NEVER heard of this company! Looking forward to checking them out!

  14. These sound really cool! I love the idea of washing my hair with beer and I also love that they give back to clean water and hygiene initiatives. I’m all about companies that give back and clean water is one of my big causes. 🙂 I need to check these out!

  15. thesophiadiaries

That’s so cool that it worked on you! And what a funny concept.. did your scalp feel dry afterwards or no? Just because alcohol has drying tendencies 🙂

    1. thesophiadiaries

Oh interesting! Thanks for this review then! I might have to really try it out 🙂

  16. I was a little skeptical when I first read beer and hair in the same sentence. Like you, I wouldn’t want to walk around with my hair smelling like beer all day (although, who would?) I’m so glad you loved this product! It sounds like something I would definitely like to try–I love that it has all natural ingredients too!

  17. I had always heard beer was good for your hair, so this looks so cool! I love beer….so I might have to give this a try.
Also, once every 2 weeks?? I wash my hair daily because of working out. My hair is kind of thin so it gets greasy so quick. I tried delaying washes…but it just looks soo horrible for work. Haha

  18. This sounds so unique but I’ve actually heard a lot of about washing your hair with beer so I’m not totally surprised!

  19. haha! I don’t use dry shampoo! If I do, I HAVE to wash it within 48 hours because it feels icky. The trick is really not using product TBH, letting your hair do it’s natural job. It takes time for it to balance itself out again, but its saved me so much time and money!

  20. This is so cool. I’ve never heard of this before — but I think it’s awesome they are doing something so unique!

  21. OMG this sounds awesome. I have super thin hair so the thickening shampoo sounds perfect for me (always craving the extra volume ya know) and I love a great product that gives back!!

    Tori

  22. Luzél Opperman

You only was your hair twice a week? Well I only wash mine once a day! So at least that is only once in a time frame right? hahaha. But you really sold this product! So keen to try it!

  23. April@LoveOurRealLife

This looks like a great product! I appreciate the review. I must admit, I’m a bit jealous you can go 2 weeks between hair washings. That would not be a pretty sight for me;-)

  24. I can’t say I’ve heard of this product ( Broo) but I’m definately intrigued. It sounds amazing, would definately like to try it but i don’t think they have it here in Ireland?! What a shame:(

  25. I’ve taken notice that beer is being used on hair but I’ve never really looked deep into it. I’ve never heard of this shampoo, and I am not quite sure if it would work on my kinky knots, but I love the fact that the ingredients are natural!

  26. I’ve heard about this before… but I was never willing to put beer in my hair ha ha. This, though, I would try. I’m always looking for new shampoos to try out on my super fine and thin hair, thinking this might be my next purchase. Thanks for the info.

  27. I have to get this for my boyfriend and I! I love the idea and he would use it without feeling like he was going to step out of the shower smelling like a girl.

  28. This is such an interesting concept! I have never heard of this before. This is something my husband would love. Especially since he is obsessssed with the smell of peppermint!

  29. This is such a neat product! I never would have thought that people use beer in their hair, but I guess it makes sense for all the stuff that it can do for you. I’ll have to look into these shampoos!

  30. Prasanthi Kadiyala

I have heard a lot about using beer for hair so it makes your hair straight and smooth. Good to know more details about it 🙂 Great post 🙂

  31. This is so cool and I definitely want to give it a try! The yellow thickening one sounds right up my alley! Alsooooo, your hair is seriously #lifegoals!! I need to stop washing and blow drying so much! Def gonna take your hair training advice.

  32. I’ve been wanting to read your post on this! It sounds pretty amazing. I’m really curious how it will work with my natural curly hair! I may have to try it out!

    xx

  33. These products look great (and so do your hair) and I love their cause! I will have to look up the ingredient list! So cool, thank you for introducing me to it!

  34. What an amazing company and their products sound wonderful too! I’ll definitely have to try them out next time I go to buy shampoo.

  35. I LOVE that it’s moisturizing! I need to try this stuff, I’ve never heard of it but now you have me wanting to grab it and try it out!!

  36. Meaghan Gonzalez

This sounds so cool! I’m all about natural haircare products, so this definitely appeals to me. I’m definitely going go grab some to try!

    Meaghan xx

  37. I’ve heard about the benefits of beer for hair and body, but I’ve never had the guts to try it for my hair because I was afraid I would smell like I had ingested one too many pints of beer. It’s relieving to know that with BRÖÖ there’s no weird beer smell to worry out. I’m very curious about this brand, I think I will give a try. 🙂

  38. I’ve never head about this product before! I also use tea tree oil based shampoo so it was great to hear that this measured up. I wash my hair once a week, so this might be a good product to add to the rotation

  39. Ive definitely tried rinsing my hair with beer but have never heard of this company. I’d definitely like to try it out!

  40. I am so impressed by your two weeks! I’m up to 5 days now and 14 just seems so far away haha. I think I’d love the peppermint scented one!

  41. This is awesome and I’ve never heard of it before! So great it’s vegan 🙂 I only look for products that are natural, plant-based, etc. It’s good to find such a unique one, with cool scents too!

  42. I literally thought you used the actual beer. Haha! I never tried using it before so I’m going to give this a try 🙂

  43. Alyssa Kolsky Hertzig

It sounds amazing! I have long heard that washing with beer is good for your hair but I’ve never tried it. Think it’s time to start! ?

  44. Patricia @ Grab a Plate

This sounds great — I think I’d love the one w/ peppermint! The texture seems great! Side note: my friend just told me that she ran out of her “good” dry shampoo so was using a drugstore brand in the meantime. She wondered why it made her hair so greasy & smelled weird. She had been mistakenly using deodorant!

  45. This sounds like an amazing product… one that I need!! I’m like you, I only wash my hair about once every two weeks. My hair is super thick and coarse and Kentucky is so humid… so it looks like a big frizzball in the winter 🙁 I need to find my miracle product, because I’m hating my hair right now!

  46. Super interesting! Did it leave any residue after the wash? I can’t believe you only wash your hair every 2 weeks. I try for every few days, but I have so many natural oils and it gets gross!

    1. I had read reviews that said it did, so i rinsed REALLY well and my hair felt amazing; like i mentioned in the post, i didnt share that tidbit with my husband so he rinsed normal the first time and did feel like his hair was thicker and had a little residue left. – yeah so oils are actually really funny! basically the more you stimulate your hair follicles and wash it, the more oil it will produce quickly, it will actually slow down production and you can train it (granted its a kind of gross process) to push it like I did. It’s why so many people who wash their hair every day complain its oily, they are putting the glands on overdrive!

  47. I had heard about using beer for hair and I too was very skeptical. I didn’t want to walk around all day smelling like I’d just arrived from a frat party. But this blog post has made me reconsider!

  48. Margarette Puno

Really? Beer for hair? That’s amazing. Omg! Should I give it a try? Uhmm just thinking what kind of beer should I use.

  49. I have always heard such great things beer does to one’s hair but never tried it, but reading about it now I think I am definitely gonna give it a go.
    XO

  50. This is really intriguing! I’m growing my hair out after an awful haircut right before our wedding, but I might want to try this after it! This a really great review Rachel!

  51. Hmm, I’m not a beer drinker either and this sounded a bit too hipster-trendy for me BUT after reading your review I may just go for it! My locks have seen better days so if beer is what it takes to get my hair healthy again, I think I’ll try this out!

  52. I read the title of this post and was definitely intrigued! I would have never thought to use beer hops for my hair… however, I love your review! I am definitely going to have to look more into this!
