SO excited to finally reveal our living room! This room was definitely the hardest to tackle for a few reasons:
1) It's shaped a little oddly.
You see it is “normal” in the sense that it's just a rectangular room, but it's a little odd in the section we decided to place the TV. A portion of the TV wall is cut short for a staircase. Meaning the TV sits in the middle of that wall, but not in the middle of the room? I don't even know if that makes sense, but for someone crazy about symmetry it was frustrating.
2) We have reallyyyy high ceilings!
Which is a total blessing, but a major dilemma when deciding whether or not to put holes in our rental! At one point, we finally decided to put a shelf above the TV. It was going to be so pretty – all boho feeling with some plants, a beautiful gold mirror, and art… until…
#AdultingRealityCheck #1:
We went to nail in the shelf and realized there was a metal stud! OOPS! I wasn't about to make out lives any harder, so we decided to go ultra minimalist with just a wall hanging. – which is also a little too far to the right than I would like because of a stud… oh well!
Life Lesson: Check for studs!
3) The theme.
Originally I dreamt of a farmhouse living room. I have the driftwood entertainment center you may remember from my jungalow inspired office reveal. We planned on putting in our living room. My desk, was supposed to be our dining room table (also driftwood). However, our living room and kitchen are all open and flow into each other. The kitchen has brown granite counters and the cabinets are an autumn mapley wood (is that a thing? it is now). The grey woods were just too much of a contrast and ended up in my office.
To say I felt at a loss with what to do with this room is an understatement. Especially since many of you may remember we had no furniture except the two pieces I just mentioned when we moved in. No couch. No coffee table. Nothing. For months we walked through this room, playing fetch with Tucker, and dreamt about what it could be… when we stumbled across the Dollar Shave Club CEO's home. Inspiration struck! West Coast Boho meets Midcentury Yes. Fun to push ourselves creatively? YASS!
West Coast Boho Meets Mid Century Modern
The Couch:
Let's start with the non-negotiable first purchase: the Delilah couch from City Furniture. This couch is life. E and I sat on it during one of our many furniture store runs and immediately new it was heaven on earth and needed it. Originally we planned on getting the couch and love seat version, but due to the pesky townhouse wall situation I mentioned, we opted for the small sectional (it comes in a large sectional too!).
The seats are a down and fiber cushion blend and extra deeppp, like the deepest couch I've ever sat on deep. It makes you feel cozy. Like being enveloped in a cloud cozy. The cover is a white denim that's super soft, and can be removed and washed! They make the couch in grey too, which I heavily considered since a lot of people told us we're crazy for getting a white couch, but we love it. Since it's denim I figured we could always spray it with some sort of waterproof protectant I used to see my dad spray on his khakis — I would assume, we haven't done this since we opted for the stain protection plan where they will actually come out and replace the couch if it needs!
#AdultingRealityCheck #2:
We live in a three story town house. Which means our living room is on the second floor. Like I said, we have really high ceilings so I never though the length of the couch would be an issue. However, if you caught my insta-story a while back, we simply could not get it up the first flight! We tried everything and it wouldn't work. I was on the verge of tears when the amazing delivery guys from City Furniture suggested getting the sectional instead. I was SO nervous because I thought the sectional would be too big for the room and my heart was SO set on this couch (seriously, if you sat on it, your heart would be set on it too!).
Lesson Learned: Measure everything!
Measure the space you plan on putting the piece in, doorways, stairs, hallways and anywhere else the piece will need to be navigated through!
I measured out the tiles for the small sectional and it fit! It really is perfect. I'm thrilled we ended up with the sectional too, it's so easy to swap the ends around and this little corner section has basically become my second office:

Alright, now that we have our dream couch and a theme, it's time to tackle the other pieces in the room.
The Coffee Table:
#AdultingRealityCheck #3:
I had always been in love with this coffee table from West Elm. Again, not being the best at this whole decorating thing and riding my high of this new theme, I impulsively jumped the gun and bought the table when they were doing a sale… totally forgetting to check the dimensions. It's a little thinner than I would like, given how big our couch is, but it's fine. The other thing I didnt' consider is that it's marble.

I always heard don't buy marble, but never understood why until we got our first couple of water drops on it… oops! I still need to properly seal the table and accidentally got a lotttt of lemon juice on it. I acted fast and coated the stain with baking soda and peroxide mixture but it still has some etchings. Andddd that's why we can't have nice things folks.
Lesson Learned: Again, always measure & don't buy marble unless you know what you're doing.
The Entertainment Center:
With a couch and a table, I was starting to feel good. Only every midcentury modern entertainment center or buffet table I came across was $1,000-$7,000. Panic was starting to set in. Would this project ever get finished?!? At that point in our lives, weekly HomeGoods trips were the norm. We were doing a return, when I said let's do a quick lap around. I turned the first corner and I saw it. The perfect entertainment center:
At $250 we felt like we had just won the lottery! While we waited to load it into our car, so many people went up to it and wanted it… but it was ourrssss! *happy dance*

Around The TV:
Like I mentioned, the TV wall was a struggle. Once we decided to skip the shelf and keep it minimalist, I knew we needed a plant. I was set on a fiddle leaf fig tree, but have a black thumb. For months I searched trying to find a faux one I loved and just kept coming back to this one from Pottery Barn. I decided to use this basket from Lulu & Georgia as it's planter.

The wall hanging and basket ended up being a perfect way to tie the colors from the bookshelf and pillows together.

Layered Rugs:
The carpet was also an impulse decision! I had seen/read about the layered rug trend but had no intention of ever trying it. While at Nordstrom Rack I saw the above blue and white towel. Yes towel. That's a BATH TOWEL! I thought it was SO cute and would be perfect for our living room — but, also like weird. Who puts a towel in their living room?! When I came across the neutral weaved rug below it and got a crazy idea: what if I try the layered rug trend, but with this towel I'm in love with? My husband thought I was legit crazy in the store. Skeptical AF that this would work, I laid them down, topped with the table and voila! We were in love! Total cost? less than $60!
The Book Shelf:
The bookshelf in the back corner was a Gilt find, but I also found it on Amazon here. It was originally supposed to go in my office where the banana leaf tapestry and couch are. But then I ended up with the couch and decided to move it upstairs. Truthfully, it's in our living room right now, but I always envisioned it in a babies room, so that's where it will probably make it's way in time since it's not a perfect fit in that corner. For now, it's holding our memories and I love it.
The Accents:
The accents were really fun to play around with. Since we are starting from scratch I wanted to find some good deals. The black and white textured pillows were actually $6 from Target! I decided to grab the color blocked geometric shape pillows on sale from Target as well since they reminded me a little of our inspo room. They are sold out of all of them except this one, but here are some similar options here and here.
In the future, I think I want to swap these out for some geometric designs with rich brown leather, powder blue and blush in the color scheme similar to the look and feel of Kaekoo‘s (seriously check out her pillows, they are so pretty!). The cactus pillows were a last minute impulse buy on sale at Nordstrom Rack.
Nordstrom rack was pretty clutch for the book shelf actually. I grabbed all of the candles, tin buckets, and cactus goodies from there:
The orange vase is from Target. The picture frames and plant are from Homegoods. You guys already know I have a pink Himalayan salt lamp in every room #obsessed. And this little skull figurine was a Goodwill find.
The Heart Of Our Home
Truthfully, there is still a lot I want to switch up in terms of the accents. I'd love to splurge on the right pillows some day that would be a bit richer and warmer instead of so bright. I think it would be a great way to tie in the warmer tones of the entertainment center and coffee table. But I was looking to get the accents done pretty cost effectively which I think we succeeded on (also a reason why you can't shop a lot of them!)
The Delilah couch is an absolute steal too! I honestly was shocked at how inexpensive it was! In fact, when checking out, I started talking with one of the City Furniture employees and he said it's such a good deal that countless people actually ship it up north because for the quality and price point they are still coming out ahead of buying one up north!

We really do love our living room! It's become the heart of our home which is so cool since we spent so many years in one bedroom furnished apartments with super uncomfortable living rooms! We love playing board games, taking naps or watching movies on the couch, and chasing Tucker around in there.
And that's it for our West Coast Boho Meets Mid-Century Modern Living Room!

Sounds like you had some great men that really worked with you to get the right couch in the door. Always measure the space and doors to make sure everything will come in without a problem.
Yes, we got so lucky! They tried everything and saved the day with their suggestion!
Wow I love the design of this room!! So cute!! That couch – yes it would be not negotiable for me as well!
Thank you!! It really is the bestttt! And so well priced!
What a great room! I’m awful at decorating so I haven’t had a go at it. Such a creative and nice space!
Thanks Amanda!
I’m an Arizona girl so I love anything with cacti on it. I love how much light you get in your living room!
haha thank you!! Yes when we saw how much light there was we were immediately sold!
In love with your living room! I feel like boho and mid century defines my style, too
Yass! It’s so warm and cozy!
I really enjoyed reading your home decor process! And I also loved how you adjusted to all of the unplanned changes. You living room looks AMAZING, so well-styled and yet comfortable all at the same time!
xxx,
Mary
Thank you so much! It was definitely a bumpy road but so worth learning from!
Haha I love all the lessons you learned during this process! Your home style/decor is amazing, and I’m a tad obsessed. I might have to start borrowing a few ideas when I finally start on my office!
Thanks girlie! Can’t wait to see how your office comes together! If it’s anything like your wedding, it’ll be perfection!
I love this look! So many fun colors! This is right up my alley!
Thank you!
You did a great job!! I love that entertainment center and I am always stalking Home Goods as well.
Thank you!! It’s definitely worth it!
I absolutely love how this room came together and what a steal on that entertainment center-you seriously got such a great deal! I’m also totally in awe of the towel/rug situation, I never would’ve guessed that wasn’t a legit rug if you hadn’t told me!
Yes!! It’s why we splurged on the coffee table actually, since we had budgeted so much more for the entertainment center!
I think y’all did a great job on the living room and it totally reflects your personal style- which is important!! I LOVE that coffee table- ugh about it being marble and hard to deal with though!
Thank you! It was definitely a learning curve, but it love it!
We have the same decor taste!! Love your living room – that entertainment center and coffee table are perfection.
Haha we do!! We got so lucky with that entertainment center!
This is absolutely gorgeous! I love love LOVE your photography <3
Thank you!!
I love EVERYTHING about this post! I have been wanting to try layered rugs and that thing about the marble is good to know…I had heard the same but didn’t know even just water would be an issue!
Thanks Tilley!! Yes! even just a little drop can darken it! it won’t etch it like the lemon juice did, but it’s definitely a different experience! If you do get marble, just have a sealant ready to go the day you bring it into your home, seal it and use coasters and stone safe cleaning products! Our issue was that we didn’t seal it (and still havent haha)
Your living room looks great! When my sister bought her home, she decided to only bring things into the house that she loved. It took her a while to get it furnished, but it looks amazing. She has a lot of mid century furnishings. My husband and I started off with hand me down furniture and we haven’t found a way to tie things all together.
Yes! that’s what we’ve been trying to do! Especially since this is just a rental, we don’t want to move stuff we don’t love!
Your living room looks awesome! I love the layout and all the details!
Looks great! You are so lucky you have high ceilings. Great job!
Thank you!!
It turned out so well! It looks so so good! Lovee the couch!
Thanks Angeline!
First, you and E are so cute!! Love y’all! Second, I love the choices you made. The furniture. The accents. It looks so great! That coffee table is so cute!
Awe thank you!!
Love how your living room turned out! This style is fab.
Thanks Jenny!
You did not show your gaming devices. Therefore, your living room is not yet complete. ;D Otherwise, it looks good so far. Very clean style.
Haha there’s a Wii in the entertainment center!
I love all the colorful accents you used! Great job on the room!
thank you Lecy!
I just love the look and theme of your living room, it is beautiful and seems like a really warm space to relax in. I love that planter basket near your tv, I might have to copy you and get one for myself!
Awe thank you! Do it! It’s only $25 and I think lulu and georgia still have a big sale going on!
Amazing home decor! Thank you for sharing!
thank you!
It looks wonderful! I know you shouldn’t buy marble however that table is gorgeous, totally worth it
Haha that’s where I settled too! It just was a learning curve that I wish I knew before purchasing!
Ok so… can I move in? I love your home it is beautiful! The couch and the entertainment center are my favorite. Although a white couch has to be a brave purchase haha. I would ruin it I know it. Great ideas here!
Haha we have a guest room on that floor! Yeah thats why we got the stain protection plan! Our previous apartment (furnished) had a white couch and we did well with it so we decided to go for it since we loved it so much!
I love it! It really anchors the room! As long as the pup doesn’t have muddy paws all over it.
what a cool room; you have great style!
Ok. Can you come decorate my house for me? I am the WORST.
Haha! Hopping on a flight right now!
This is so cute! Gives me Palm Spring vibes. I love that it’s minimalist but still has tons of character!
Ahh I hadn’t thought about that but can totally see it!! And that’s exactly what I was going for – minimalist but with color! I like to feel like I can breathe, but still have some personality haha!
Your place is so cute!!! I love all your decor!
Thanks Bella!
This is so cute! I really need that coffee table!
Your living room looks great! That sectional looks so comfy! It must feel amazing to have it finished. I’m so bad about starting on a room and then never actually finishing it.
Yes! You just explained our master bedroom struggle! It was the first room in our house that we started to get furniture for, but it’s the last one we will be finishing! It’s been such a struggle. This room was a lucky explosion where I just hit Nordstrom Rack and Homegoods on lucky days where I got big bulks of decor items done quickly!
Love it, nice bright colours. Love your home decor process.
Thank you!
Thank you! Hope you can learn from some of my mistakes haha!
Thank you!!
Thanks Belle! It really is amazingggg!
What a happy, cozy space! Great job! And thanks for the Nordstrom Rack reminder, I never think to look for home goods there!
LOVE LOVE how it came out. all the colors are great too! Great style meshing!
I love your living room! Love all the little details you put into it. Also you and your fam are adorable.
OH EM GEE! I love it. Please come decorate MY townhouse that we also just moved in to!!!
That couch looks so comfy and perfect for a nap! While the couch I currently have in our living room works, I’m definitely looking to upgrade in the next couple of years here. Why do they have to be so expensive though?!
For the quality and size of this couch I think it’s a steal! They have a few different size and style options too. The couch and love seat was a few hundred dollars less than the sectional, and equally as comfortable (its what we originally ordered!). Both together was $1700 (but you can get each separately) and this was $2000 – still expensive but it looks and feels like a $5000 couch IMO, especially compared to the other couches we were looking at in that price range! Whatever you do, I would HIGHLY recommend a deep seat like this! I’ll never go back to anything else! It’s perfect for naps like you said haha!
What a gorgeous living room! I am LOVING that couch – I think you totally made the right call by going with the sectional!
You did such a great job. Loving all of it, especially the small details.
Yup, I am totally in love with that couch too! We just bought a house and are searching now for something beautiful and comfy like that. That exact one might be a tad too big for our space but might work.
What a beautiful home! I love how you decorated everything and that couch is so perfect for gathering with friends!
I love this design, it looks so great! I also tell myself that I’ll have a farmhouse style living room design but we’ll see if I end up going with that once we have the actual space/home 🙂
I think the couch is my favorite!!
Your place looks seriously adorable!! You have such beautiful style. 🙂 My new living room is oddly shaped, too, and I’ve had SUCH difficulty figuring out how to configure things. You do it so effortlessly!!
Love everything, but the cactus accents and pillows have to be my fave!
I love your style so much!! I really love everything, especially the bookshelf, the coffee table, and entertainment center!
Y’ALL ARE SO CUTE. Also it’s so fun seeing you wear a dress. ALSO THIS COUCH. Def a cloud. And I can’t believe your entertainment console was only $250!!!!
My OCD would go nuts if the TV was centered for one aspect but not another. Either way, it sounds and looks suuuuper cute!
GIRL, YES! IT drives me crazyyyyy! But I’m getting used to it, it drove me super crazy though when trying to photograph the room lol
We also have really high ceilings, I’ve always wanted to make use of the vertical space. Your home is gorgeous!
Gosh I am loving your living room!!
I LOVE THIS!!! It’s beautiful, I love the colours, the marble coffee table looks fantastic… everything is fabulous!
The coffee table is awesome! Our floors are a special kind of marble and I’ve dropped lemons and other not so good things on it and probably muttered some bad words trying to clean it up.
Wow! i really love the decor of your living room! Especially the picture frame!
Yay!!! Way to go! You must feel so accomplished with the new changes. I love the style you went for…and grateful for your tips!
What a great space! Our living room is mid-century modern too and it was a challenge to find affordable pieces, but thankfully Target, Home Goods, and TJMaxx always came through! I’ve been wanting to get a marble coffee table, so I’m glad I read about the issues you’ve had with it…now I’m rethinking the whole idea!
Yeah – even if you do get it, the cleaning products for it are more expensive too! I think they have some great granite and ceramic ones today (especially at target I’m sure!) that are great alternatives with the same look!
Y’all did such an amazing job with this! I’m absolutely in love with that couch. It looks so comfy! I also love that you layered the rugs. That’s such an awesome idea.
OK, I love your mixed styles! I would also love to have a beautiful room like that to decorate. The couch looks so comfy, I don’t know if I would sit anywhere else – just get my laptop desk and work from there all day! Your comment about remembering to measure reminds me of a saying we seamstresses and quilters say: Measure twice, cut once! 😉
First of all, let me just say that these photos are adorable! I love how you decorated. My boyfriend and I just moved in together and we’ve been slowly trying to get some furniture and decorate but decorating is so hard lol. I definitely don’t have the ~eye~ for decorating. Although I really wish I was Joanna Gaines. I love your couch, it looks perfect for napping!
Love the design of this room, and couch looks so nice and comfy!
You have a terrific eye for detail. I had never heard of the idea of layering rugs until recently. It is such a n interesting concept.
I love this space! It’s so fresh and white. Can’t believe that’s a towel and not a rug…I would have never known. We are three weeks away from closing on our first house so I am soaking up all the decorating/savings tips I can find!
LOVE LOVE LOVE your living room!
